Regarding the growing volume of the data flow, audit of NIX.CZ technology was conducted by Alef Nula a.s. – Cisco Gold Certified Partner in Czech Republic. During January, the backbone of NIX.CZ Internet Exchange Point was upgraded with two new switches Cisco Catalyst 6500, and the capacity of all switches was increased from 40 to 50 Gb/s.
The purpose of the independent audit conducted in NIX.CZ Association was to verify – prior to the planned increase in the capacity of the exchange point – that no hardware and software used within the network is out-of-date, that it is not necessary to eliminate any risks preventing the optimisation of the network, and that only standard software is used in all the equipment within the network.
“The audit has confirmed that only legal Cisco software and legal Cisco IOS operating system is being used within the whole network. In practise this means that NIX.CZ Exchange Point can use the support provided by Cisco company to the full extent, which consequently increases the stability of the network, minimizes the risk of failure and extends the service life of hardware,” adds Roman Aprias, Senior System Engineer from Alef Nula a.s.
At the present time the data flow through NIX.CZ infrastructure peaks close to 120 Gb/s. In October 2008, this peak was around 50 Gb/s and in December 2005 just 10 Gb/s. Between years 2005 – 2009, the data flow carried over the exchange point increased more than times. The planned upgrade of the Internet Exchange Point was carried out during the night from 20th to 21st January without any problems. Besides the two new switches which were added to help the five currently used, NIX.CZ Association uses the technology of DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) from Cisco Company, which enables operation of multiple optical channels on a single leased fibre. One of the advantages of this technology is that even data-demanding applications can be satisfied without interruptions, which enables faster and more stable services for end users. The upgrade of the Internet Exchange Point was also preceded by a significant reduction in the price of high-capacity ports so, presumably, the newly created space will fill up quickly.
“Despite the general decrease in investments and the overall economic situation, the data flow through our Internet Exchange Point doubled again in 2009 and keeps growing like in the previous years. It is evident that the popularity of the Internet as well as the number of its users is increasing, hand in hand with the demands from Internet applications. The combination of these two factors imposes higher requirements on the connection capacity. Consequently, it is necessary to continuously and deliberately increase and upgrade the infrastructure of the Internet Exchange Point. We continuously monitor the development of new technologies and technical solutions applied by other IXPs (Internet eXchange Points). We use this knowledge and our own experience to find the best solution for the NIX.CZ Internet Exchange Point.” says Mr Tomáš Maršálek, Director of NIX.CZ, z.s.p.o.
About NIX.CZ Association
NIX.CZ, a professional association of legal entities, has been associating leading Czech and foreign Internet providers (ISP) in order to enable mutual interconnection of their networks. At present, the 60-70% share in the total data flow makes NIX.CZ the largest Neutral Internet Exchange Point in the Czech Republic. It also ranks among the 10 largest IXPs in Europe. Since 2003, the NIX.CZ Internet Exchange Point has supported peering via the IPv6 protocol.
